In January 2011, researchers from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Calif. tested a future aircraft concept model. The model, called AMELIA (Advanced Model for Extreme Lift and Improved Aeroacoustics), has a 10-foot wing span and is 1/13th scale. It was tested in the National Full-Scale Aerodynamic Complex. AMELIA was designed as a 100-passenger regional cruise efficient, short takeoff and landing airliner. Photo Credit: NASA Ames Research Center / Dominic Hart

Nineteen teams pushed their robot competitors to the limit, and three teams claimed a total of ,000 in NASA prizes at this year's Regolith Excavation Challenge on Oct. 17-18. This is the first time in the competition's three-year history that any team qualified for a cash prize, the largest NASA has awarded to date. After two days of intense competition hosted at NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif., organizers conferred first place prize of ,000 to Paul's Robotics of Worcester,...

This image of candidate craters is based on current information about the age, depth and structure of the selected craters. Approximately 30 days before impact, the LCROSS science team will announce the selection of the final impact crater. The selection will take into account any additional information, especially from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, collected about the candidate craters.

It all started on May 25, 1961, when President John F. Kennedy announced the goal of sending astronauts to the moon before the end of the decade. Coming just three weeks after Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space, Kennedy's bold challenge set the nation on a journey unlike any before in human history. Eight years of hard work by thousands of Americans came to fruition on July 20, 1969, when Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong stepped out of the lunar module and took...

Photographer : JPL This global view of the surface of Venus is centered at 270 degrees east longitude. Magellan synthetic aperture radar mosaics from the first cycle of Magellan mapping are mapped onto a computer-simulated globe to create this image. Data gaps are filled with Pioneer-Venus orbiter data, or a constant mid-range value. Simulated color is used to inhance small-scale structure. The simulated hues are based on color images recorded by the Soviet Venera 13 and 14 spacecraft.

Photographer: JPL This is a computer-generated perspective rendering of one of the caldera-like depressions on Triton, as it would appear if viewed from the northeast. The image was obtained by geometrically reprojecting part of a Voyager high-resolution frame taken Aug. 24, 1989, when the spacecraft was about 181,800 km (112,900 miles) from Triton. Information about surface topography needed to generate the oblique view was obtained from the same image by the technique called photoclinometry...

Photographer: JPL P-34578 BW One of two new ring arcs, or partial rings, discovered by Voyager 2, is faintly visible just outside the orbit of the Neptunian moon 1989N4.The 155-second exposure taken by the spacecraft's narrow-angle camera shows the glare of an overexposed Neptune to the right of the moon and ring arc. The two bright streaks below the moon and ring arc are stars. The ring arc is approximately 50,000 kilometers (30,000 miles) long. The second ring arc, not apparent here, is about...

Photo by Voyager 1 (JPL) The spacecraft took this photo of the planet Jupiter on Jan 24, while still more than 25 million miles (40 million kilometers) away. As the spacecraft draws closer to the planet (about 1 million kilometers a day) more details are emergng in the turbulent clouds. The Great Red Spot shows prominently below center, surrounded by what scientists call a remarkably complex region of the giant planet's atmosphere. An elongated yellow cloud within the Great Red Spot is swirling...

Composite Pioneer 10 imagery Excitement rose as the PICS displayed images of Jupiter of ever-increasing size as Pioneer 10 plunged at high speed toward its closest approach to the planet. The most dramatic moment was perhaps after closest approach and after the spacecraft has been hidden behind Jupiter. PICS (Pioneer Image Converter System) began to show a few spots on the screens, which gradually built up into a very distorted crescent-shaped Jupiter. "Sunrise on Jupiter," exclaimed...
